I am easily swayed, and you may have seen how taking cold showers is better than warm showers and may not believe the hype, as I did. Why would I go out of my way to take a cold shower when warm showers are so much more relaxing? That's what I thought at first, too, but here are some of the changes I've noticed as well as some of the benefits of taking cold showers!
Even though I've only recently begun taking cold showers, I've noticed or felt some differences. The first thing I noticed was that I felt cleaner. I don't believe that cold water makes you cleaner, but I believe it has that effect on me. Another thing I've noticed is that my hair is less frizzy. I have wavy hair, which makes it prone to frizz, and with cold water, I feel like my frizz has been considerably reduced, and my ends feel a lot softer than before because warm water can cause damage to the hair.
Changing from a hot to a cold shower, even for a few minutes, may protect you from circulating viruses. Cold water shock can stimulate blood cells that fight infection (leukocytes). One study in the Netherlands discovered that people who took cold showers for 30, 60, or 90 seconds for 90 days called in sick 29% less than those who did not. That is, taking cold showers keeps you from getting sick. Though if you're looking to avoid school, maybe stick to warm showers?
There has been little research into the effects of cold water therapy on depression. However, existing research shows some promising results. Participants in one clinical study who took daily cold showers for several months reported fewer depression symptoms. According to additional research, cold water may improve your mood and reduce anxiety. Though you should still seek professional help, this is just to say that cold showers can be a mood booster and do not cure depression.
Cold showers may help with acne, but not in the extreme, cure-all way that is frequently portrayed online. According to board-certified dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD, cool temperatures constrict blood vessels, which can reduce swelling, inflammation, and overall redness.
That is all and by no means you should rely on cold showers for all of your health problems.
